The Teddy Bear is a kind of toy bear that is made with fabric and stuffed with plush. Historians have noted that the Teddy Bear was invented in the early 20th century in the United States and Germany simultaneously. The name “Teddy Bear” came from former United States president Theodor Roosevelt who was known as Teddy. The name Teddy is rooted in an incident which happened back in 1902.

President Roosevelt was on a pre-planned hunting tour in the region of Mississippi along with other hunters in a hunting competition. As some of the other hunters had already captured their prey, the companions of Roosevelt aimed to follow and grab an American Black Bear. This motivated a political cartoon drawn in The Washington Post with the title “Drawing the Line in Mississippi”.  

This persuaded the businessman and inventor Morris Michtom to craft a new toy which would be stuffed bear. Morris went on to spend one full day with the President and sought his permission to use the name, permission was approved later on. That’s how the concept of the Teddy Bear toy became a reality. Morris Michtom put one Teddy Bear in the window corner of his shop and the bear sold shortly after.
